Canvas, vulcanised sole, flat profile: Chucks, Old Skools and skate sneakers are everyday classics. Here you'll find them from several shops.

Vulcanised or cupsole?

Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars and most Vans use a vulcanised sole: the sole and upper are joined with rubber foxing tape and cured under heat. This makes the shoes flat, flexible and very close to the ground – ideal for board feel when skating, but with little cushioning. Cupsole models such as the Vans Knu Skool or many Nike SB shoes have a thicker, stitched sole unit that offers more protection on hard landings.

The classics

These are the models you'll find most often in the comparison:

  • Converse Chuck Taylor All Star: canvas, as Low (OX) and High (Hi), plus platform versions such as the Lift.
  • Vans Old Skool: low-top with suede overlays and the "Jazz Stripe".
  • Vans Sk8-Hi: high collar with padding that protects the ankle.
  • Vans Era and Authentic: very simple, with thin padding.
  • Nike SB (Dunk, Chron, Blazer): skate versions with Zoom Air or foam insoles.

Sizes: Chucks run large

Converse Chucks are almost always described as running large; half to a full size smaller than your sports-shoe size is common. Vans fit true to size or slightly snug; with suede Vans Old Skools, half a size up can make sense. Because canvas barely gives, the shoe should be comfortable from the start.

Durability and care

Canvas is easy to clean with a brush, water and a little soap. Some people wash Chucks on a gentle machine cycle; this can strain the glue and shape, so washing by hand is better. When skating, griptape quickly wears down the side of the upper. Models with suede reinforcement or a rubber toe cap last longer there. The insole of vulcanised shoes is thin: if you walk a lot, swap it for a cushioned insert.

Which shoe for which purpose?

For skating, models with a suede upper and a reinforced toe area are a good choice, such as the Old Skool Pro or Nike SB, because they stand up to griptape for longer. For gigs, festivals and everyday wear, Chucks and classic Vans are light, affordable and quick to clean. In winter, high-top versions with lining or water-repellent leather are more comfortable; some Vans models even come with insulated lining and a waterproof membrane. For long distances on foot, a cushioned insole remains the biggest comfort upgrade.
