Good sneakers don't have to be expensive. Here you'll find branded models currently on offer for under €50, and learn what to look for in cheaper shoes.

What you get in the budget range

Under €50, the big brands mainly offer entry-level models and older colourways: the adidas Runfalcon, Galaxy, VL Court or Breaknet, Puma Smash, ST Runner or Anzarun, Nike Court Legacy or Revolution, plus selected Skechers and Converse models. These are solid everyday and leisure shoes. They use simpler foams and synthetics instead of elaborate materials, but they do the job for town, school and occasional sport.

The list only shows new goods from established brands, sorted by price. Because prices change all the time, a model may be above the limit tomorrow – or a new one may be added.

How to spot good cheap sneakers

A low price is only a good deal if the shoe also lasts:

  • Stitched or neatly glued sole edges without glue residue.
  • A removable insole so you can replace it.
  • A rubber outsole at the heel and ball of the foot rather than a pure EVA sole.
  • Clear size information with the brand's size chart.
  • A commercial seller with a returns policy.

Where the savings come from

Cheaper models usually save on the midsole and upper. Instead of a responsive foam, they use simple EVA, which compresses faster. Synthetic leather is less breathable than real leather. For an everyday shoe that's often not a problem. But if you walk a lot or stand all day, you'll notice the difference after a few months. In that case it's better to wait for a discount on a higher-quality model.

Money-saving tips

Standard colours such as black or white are often discounted because they're produced in large quantities. Last year's models also often drop significantly in price as soon as the successor comes out. Keep an eye on the price history and compare several shops – the differences between retailers are often bigger than you'd think for cheaper sneakers. Always factor in delivery costs.

Who cheap sneakers are right for

Affordable branded sneakers are ideal as a second pair, for children and teenagers who outgrow them quickly, for school PE or as a shoe for the garden and festivals. They're also the right choice if you want to try a new style without spending much. For ambitious running training or long hours on your feet at work, on the other hand, a higher-quality model is the better investment.
